We arrived in Koblenz and began with a tour of Marksburg Castle. Before the tour left for the Marksburg Castle I took some pictures of Koblenz. At 9:45 AM we got on a bus for the tour. The castle sits high above the hill overlooking the town of Braubach and is the best preserved castle on the Rhine. Built with remarkable fortification, it was never besieged by enemies and therefore appears much the same as it did when it was built approximately 700 years ago. The tour was about 2 1/2 hours long with some a driving time of 45 minutes to and 15 minutes back as the ship moved while we where on the tour.
When we got back to the ship we had a German style lunch.
After we got back from the tour the ship left. For the rest of the day we had a scenic cruise on the Middle Rhine River. We saw many little towns, castles, ruins and other sights along the river. If seems that every town had a big old church with some having several large churches. The river was between two hills and did not have any bridges. A road and train tracks ran along each side. On many hill sides were grape vines.
This was the first day that we had any sunshine. It did rain some in the morning but there was sun in the afternoon but it was still cool on the river.

Pictured above is the Pfalzgrafenstein fortress that sits on a rock in the middle of the Rhine River. In the background on top of the hill is the Gutenfels Castle, which sits above the town of Kaub. The Gutenfels Castle was built in 1220 and was used with the Pfalzgrafenstein Castle to provide a toll zone on the Rhine River for the Holy Roman Emperor until Prussia purchased the area (1866) and ended this toll in 1867.
