Today the ship arrived in Passau, Germany.
Passau known as the City of Three Rivers. It lids at the confluence of the Inn, the Danube and the IIz Rivers. It is the last major German city on the Danube at the border of Austria. Originally a settlement of the Bojj Celtic tribe called Boiodurum, it was later the site of the Roman camp Castra Batava. In 739, an English Celtic monk named Boniface founded the diocese of Passau, the largest of the Holy Roman Empire for many years.
The Inn River brings great quantities of water out of the Alps and Passau often suffers from flooding. The high water marks on the tower of the Town Hall show the levels of flooding. About 3 weeks before we arrived in Passau it had one of the largest floods in its history. I included a picture from the internet of the flooding along with a picture on the day we arrived in Passau.
At 10 AM I took a guided walking tour of Passau and an organ concert in St. Stephen's Cathedral. The organ in St. Stephen's is the world's largest outside of the United States with 17,974 pipes and 233 stops.
At 5:30 PM, the ship left Passau for Melk, Austria.
