Travel Log for Melvin: Day 13

Today the ship arrived in Vienna, Austria.

Austria which is slightly smaller than the U. S. state of Maine at 32,375 square miles and slightly larger than Scotland, Austria boasts some of the world's most magnificent natural beauty. From the vineyard-blanketed slopes, green valleys and clear lakes in and around the Wachau Valley to the spectacular Alps in the west and south, grandeur awaits around every corner of this richly historic and fascinating country.

Vienna as the capital of the Republic of Austria, Vienna is the smallest in size of Austria's nine states but its most densely populated. With nearly two million inhabitants, it is home to one-quarter of the country's population. It regularly ranks among the top of all cities for quality of life, for fostering a culture of innovation, and for attracting international congresses and conventions.

Vienna has its roots in early Celtic and Roman settlements. It transformed into the resident city of the Habsburg dynasty in the late Middle Ages and eventually grew to become the de facto capital of the Holy Roman Empire and a cultural center for arts, science, music and fine cuisine. The historic center of Vienna is rich in architectural ensembles, including baroque castles and gardens, as well as the late-19th century Ringstrasse lined with grand building, monuments and parks.

At 8:45 AM we left on a Vienna City Tour and arrived back at the ship for lunch. At 2 PM, I left on a tour to Schonbrunn Palace and after dinner at 6 PM I left at 7:30 PM for a Mozart and Strauss Concert.
