Day 13 to Day 15 - World Cruise 2015 (At Sea)

Saturday, January 17, 2015

Today was the forth straight day on the sea. We are on the way to Taihoae, French Polynesia. After breakfast, Jeff McBride, the magician from the previous day show was the guest on "Good Morning Amsterdam". At 10 AM, Barbara presented the thing to see & do in Papeete. She always does a great job and the attendance at hew lectures are well attended. IAt 11 AM, Paul Eschenfelder gave a talk on how the Western view of Polynasia is affected by some of the most famous, or notorious characters who passed through Paradise. In the afternoon, Tom Goltz told the story of Alexander Selkirk from SCotland that was left behind on the South American island of Juan Fernandez where he spent more than four years of a solitary existence, successfully adapting to his strange and lonely environment. The book Robinson Crusoe was based on his story and the island is now know as Robinson Crusoe Island. The 2010 World Cruise 13 made a stop at this island. I don't remember if we got to the island.
In the afternoon, I checked the scores of the basketball games and worked on the computer among other things.
After dinner, the show was put on by the Alley Cats. This is Doo-Wop Group of four men who sang songs from the 50's and 60's.

Today was the fifth straight day on the sea. We are on the way to Taihoae, French Polynesia. Since today was Sunday, I went to the Church Service at 9 AM. We again had communion which is much different from the minister that we had on the 2013 cruise where we had communion only about two or three times for the total cruise. At 10 AM, Barbara gave hew talk on things to see & do in Bora Bora. At 11 AM, Tom Goltz took a look at Captain James Cook, the greatest explorer of the 18th century. He made three sailing expeditions into the Pacific. He was killed on his third sailing in what is now the Hawaii Islands. One of the great things that James Cook did was to draw very detailed maps of the South Pacific.
In the afternoon starting at 1 PM, the ship had the NFL game between Green Bay and Seattle in the Wajang Theater. The game was live and I watched the first half of the NFL game between New England and Indianapolis. I then went back to the room, and took a shower and dressed for dinner. When I got back to the Theater, most of the 3rd quarter was over but I watched the rest of the game and went to dinner.
Tonight was a theme dinner. The dinning room was decorated like a Tropical Paradise. After dinner, I went to a show put on by Elika Santos. He if from Hawaii and was Hawaii's 2010 Male star of the year. He sang some common music but most of his music was Polynesian Music.

Today was the sixth straight day on the sea. We are on the way to Taihoae, French Polynesia. Today the ship's clock was set back 1 hour. It was great to have an extra hour of sleep after a long day on Sunday. At 9:30 AM, Elika Santos, the presenter of the show on Sunday was the guest. At 10 AM, Paul Eschenfelder talked about Charles Lindberg and Beryl Merkham. Merkham was the first woman to fly solo across the North Atlantic, however she did it westbound. At 11 AM, the three clergy, Father Bob, Rabbi Starr and Minister Charles answered questions. The questions were great and they covered separation of the Church and State, Marriage, religious differences of Islam, Jewish and Christian religions etc. In the Afternoon, Tom Goltz presented the story of the Mutiny on the Bounty. This is the story of the LoveTragedy and Survival of the infamous Captain Blight and his five month fateful sojourn on Tahiti and its aftermath and legacy. Most of this story was not new because it was also presented on the 2013 World Cruise.
Before dinner Elika Santo gave a 1/2 hour concert. He has a very powerful voice. After dinner the show was put on by Bernie Fields. He played the Harmonica and has appeared with the Pacific Symphony in Costa Mesa, CA.
