Day 73 - World Cruise 2015 (Mumbai, India)

Thursday, March 19, 2015

Today the ship arrived in Mumbai, India.  This is my third time to visit Mumbai.  With a population of nearly 12 melon, Mumbai is the world's fourth-most populous city and certainly ranks among its most fascinating.  This is a city of contrasts with some of the world's richest and poorest people live here, ancient temples sit at the feet of skyscrapers, hint-tech businesses thrive alongside traditional markets.  It was occupied by the British for 300 years.  Mumbai is the home of Bollywood, the world's largest film industry

We again had to see an Indian Agent with our passport in person.  Because I had a tour I was one of the first to go.  At 9 AM I left on a four called " Mumbai's Religious Beats".  I was on a bus that held 37 people but only 7 were on the bus.  Our first stop was at Mahatma Gandhi's Bombay home from 1917 to 1934.  The building is now a museum and memorial to the famous leader.  The building contains many of his personal possessions.  Our next stop was at a Hindu Temple where we entered but were not allowed to take pictures.  Leaving the temple we drove over to Dhobi Ghat where we stopped for a photo.  Dhobi Ghat is an open air laundry and from sunrise to sunset, thousands of men labor to clean the clothes of city-dwellers.  From here we drove to another temple where we went inside but we could not take pictures.  From here we walked across the street and down a street to the Khishna Temple where we entered and in the this temple we could take pictures.  From here we headed back to the ship where we drove past the Gateway of India which was built in 1911.  Across the street is the Taj Mahal Palace Hotel.  At 1:30 PM we got back to the ship.

After dinner there was no show but a movie.  The movie was "The Theory of Everything."  It is the story of the relationship between the famous Physicist Stephen Hawking and his wife.  Eddie Redmayne played Stephen Hawking and won the 2015 Academy Award for Best Actor.  The ship spent the night in Mumbai.

Below are some pictures from my tour.
