Today the ship arrived in Messina, Italy at 11:30 AM. I took some pictures sailing into the harbor at Messina, Italy. This third largest city of Sicily lies on the northeast corner of the island just opposite Villa San Giovanni. Messina was originally founded by the Greeks in the 8th century BC. With a rich history filled with ferocious battles, devastating earthquakes, and debilitating disease, Messina has overcome its struggles, becoming a city teeming with a diverse culture, offering a wealth of sites to relive its past. Messina was one of the new ports added because of the cancellation of the three ports in Egypt. I left at 12:45 on a tour called "Panoramic Slopes of Mt Etna". At 11,000 feet, Mt. Etna is Europe's largest active volcano. We left Messina towards the village of Zafferana, driving south on the freeway through a fertile paradise of green vineyards and golden citrus groves. We passed through Santa Venerina, a village 1,800 feet above sea level. We stopped to view the 1992 lava flow and we also had a refreshment stop at a local hotel. Because of cloud cover we did not get a view of Mt. Etna. We arrived back at the ship at 4:30 PM.
The ship left Messina at about 6 PM. That evening after dinner the show was put on by the Amsterdam Singers & Dancers who paid tribute to th music of Burt Bacharach.
Below are some pictures for Messina, Italy and my tour.
