Today the ship arrived in Naples, Italy at around 8 AM. Naples is a town of 2 million people, it had evidence of habitation as early as the 9th center BC. Naples is one of the oldest cities in the world and it has Greek ruins along with Roman ruins. AT 8:15 AM I left on a tour called "Sorrento & Pompeii". We passed thru as many as 20 tunnels with one which is brand new and 3 miles long. After a one hour drive we arrived in the city of Sorrento, a favorite tourist destination for centuries. We stopped at a place where they sell woodwork furniture, mosaics and porcelain. We had time to walk down to a shopping area of the city. I found the Cathedral of Sorrento and viewed the interior. At 11:15 AM we walked to a nearby restaurant for lunch. At 12:15 PM we left for Pompeii located near the foot of Mt. Vesuvius. The ruins of Pompeii is considered by archaeologist to be the finest example of an ancient Roman town which was created in about 600 BC. The earthquake of 62 AD destroyed the city but it was rebuilt and with the eruption of Mt. Vesuvius in 79 AD, the town was buried beneath tons of ash and lava. It was discovered in the 16 century and later when the lava was removed, many of the people in the town were discovered. When we arrived at the site we took a tour of a local cameo factory and at 1:50 we started the tour on foot passing baths, theaters, temples, markets and the forum. At 3: 30 PM we left the ruins and had time for shopping before we left back to the ship at 4 PM. We arrived back at the ship and the ship left Naples at about 6 PM.
After dinner the show was put on by "The Piano Man" who played the music of Billy Joel & Elton John.
Below are part 2 of some pictures of Naples and my tour. See part 1 for more pictures.
