Day 39 - World Cruise 2015 (Melbourne, Australia)

Friday, February 13, 2015

Today the ship arrived at Melbourne Australia at a little before 8 AM.

Melbourne is the birthplace of much of Australian culture and has been rated the world's most livable city.  Melbourne is the home to 3.5 million people.  Melbourne's history is best charted through its iconic rivalry with Sydney.  Melbourne established itself in the first year of Queen Victoria's reign (1837) and embarked on an era of growth and development that powerfully shaped the city's character.  The mid 19 th century Victoria gold rush proved the wealth that built so many distinctive structures and established an extensive network of wealth and beautiful public green spaces.  Melbourne hosted the 1956 Summer Olympic Games.  550 thousand of Australian dollars or 440 thousand of american dollars will buy you a one bedroom condo in a high rise in Melbourne.

At 9 AM, I left on a 8 hour tour called "Wildlife & Wineries".  The port where the ship is parked is not close to the main area of Melbourne.  The bus picked us up at the port and we left for a bus tour of the city.  After driving past some of the major sites we left for the Dandenong Ranges and the Yarra Valley.  After about two in the bus we arrived at the Healesville Wildlife Sanctuary.  It opened in 1934 and boasts more than 200 species of native birds, mammals and reptiles.  We spent two hours here and left for a visit to Rochford Winery which prides itself on the production of premium quality wines.  We had a chance to sample 6 wines and then had lunch with a glass of wine.  Our next stop was at Dominique Portet where we had a short tour of the winery and then sampled 6 of their wines.  We then left for a two hour ride back to the ship and arrived at the ship at 5:15 PM.  It was a long day but I got to see the country outside of Melbourne.

A little after 6 PM the ship left for Adelaide, South Australia.  After dinner the show was put on by the Amsterdam Singers and Dancers.

Below are some pictures of Melbourne and my tour to the Yarra Valley.
