World Cruise 2017 Day 100 Cadiz, Spain

Saturday, April 15, 2017

Today the ship arrived in Cadiz, Spain.  The ship was scheduled to arrive at 8 AM but it was so foggy that the ship did not get to the dock until about 8:45 AM.  The tours were late and I took a tour called "A taste of Cadiz" which was scheduled to leave at 8:15 AM but it did not leave until 9 PM.  After driving thru Cadiz to see some of the sites the bus headed to the city of Jerez de la Frontera.  We got out of the bus and walked thru the town before we arrived at Gonzalez ByPass a local  wine cellar where we tasted some of the region's sherry wines and snacks after a tour of the cine cellar.   We left and drove back to Cadiz where we arrived at 1:30 PM.  After dinner Martin Beaumont a comedian was the show tonight.

Cádiz is a city and port in southwestern Spain. It is the capital of the province of Cádiz, one of eight which make up the autonomous community of Andalusia.  Cádiz, the oldest continuously inhabited city in Spain and one of the oldest in western Europe, was founded by the Phoenicians. Cádiz is sometimes counted as the most ancient city still standing in Western Europe.[ and has been a principal home port of the Spanish Navy since the accession of the Spanish Bourbons in the 18th century. The city is a member of the Most Ancient European Towns Network. It is also the site of the University of Cádiz.

Jerez de la Frontera  or simply Jerez, is a Spanish city and municipality in the province of Cádiz in the autonomous community of Andalusia, in southwestern Spain, situated midway between the Atlantic Ocean and the Cádiz Mountains. As of 2015, the city, the largest in the province, had 212,876 inhabitants; it is the fifth largest in Andalusia. It has become the transportation and communications hub of the province, surpassing even Cádiz, the provincial capital, in economic activity. Jerez de la Frontera is also, in terms of land area, the largest municipality in the province, and its sprawling outlying areas are a fertile zone for agriculture. There are also many cattle ranches and horse-breeding operations, as well as a world-renowned wine industry (Xerez).
González Byass is one of Spain's most well-known sherry bodegas. Its origins can be traced to 1835 when it was founded by Manuel María González Angel, who was subsequently joined by his English agent, Robert Blake Byass. The business was further expanded by the second generation of the González family, amongst them Manuel Críspulo González y Soto. The González family assumed sole control of the business in 1988. The firm produces the finosherry Tío Pepe.
