Today the ship arrived at Funchal at 7 AM. Funchal is a town on Madeira. Madeira sits atop a massive shield volcano, comprised solely of hardened lava, but the last volcanic activity was seen more than 6,000 years ago. In Madeira you find grapes and banana trees along with some other crops. There are no large fields and the fields are maintained by hand because machines are not able to work on the slopes where the crops are found. At 8:30 I left on a Cruise Specialists tour called "Scenic Madeira and Lunch at Reid's Palace". Our first stop was at Cabo Cirao the second highest sea cliff in the world and the highest in Europe. Our next stop was at a stop for offered a view of Funchal and the surrounding hills. We next drove on a winding road and this offered us a spectacular view of the interior of the island. We next drove back to Funchal for lunch at Reid' Palace. After a great lunch we drove back to the ship where we arrived at 2:45 PM. Today Ian Finkel was the show after dinner. He played the Xylophone and was very good.
Funchal is the largest city, the municipal seat and the capital of Portugal's Autonomous Region of Madeira. The city has a population of 111,892, making it the 6th largest city in Portugal, and has been the capital of Madeira for more than five centuries. Because of its high cultural and historical value, Funchal is one of Portugal's main tourist attractions. It is also popular as a destination for New Year's Eve, and it is the leading Portuguese port on cruise liner dockings.
