Today the ship arrived in Kagoshima, Japan at 8 AM. Today I went on a Cruise Specialists tour called "Kagoshima Historical and Scenic Tour". After a short drive we boarded a local ferry for the 15-minute ride to Sakurajima. Here was a mildly active volcano called Mt. Sakurajima. The bus went with us on the ferry and after arrival we drove to the Sakurajima observation deck to view the beautiful Scenery. We left and drove to a site where you could take a foot bath in a hot spring. I did not do it because I wear sporting socks which are hard to get on and off. Next we returned to Kagoshima of a traditional Japan lunch at a hotel. After lunch we drove to Senganen Japanese Garden built in 1658. Our next stop was at A place where Shochu, a Japanese traditional distilled spirt is made. We sampled some Shochu ant returned to the ship at 3:45 PM. After dinner I went the movie "Doctor Strange". The regular show was put on by Tom Briscoe, a comedian. I went to the movie because I am not fond of most of the comedians that are on the ship.
Kagoshima is the capital city of Kagoshima Prefecture at the south western tip of the island of Kyushu in Japan, and the largest city in the prefecture by some margin. It has been nicknamed the "Naples of the Eastern world" for its bay location (Aira Caldera), hot climate, and emblematic stratovolcano, Sakurajima. The city was officially founded on April 1, 1889.
On the night of June 17, 1945 the 314th bombardment wing of the Army Air Corps (120 B-29s) dropped 809.6 tons of incendiary and cluster bombs destroying 2.11 square miles (5.46 km2) of Kagoshima (44.1 percent of the built-up area). Kagoshima was targeted because of its largely expanded naval port as well as its position as a railway terminus. A single B-29 was lost to unknown circumstances. Area bombing was chosen over precision bombing because of the cloudy weather over Japan during the middle of June. The planes were forced to navigate and bomb entirely by radar.[2]
Japanese intelligence predicted that the Allied Forces would assault Kagoshima and the Ariake Bay areas of southern Kyushu to gain naval and air-bases to strike Tokyo.
Sakurajima is an active composite volcano (stratovolcano) and a former island in Kagoshima Prefecture in Kyushu, Japan. The lava flows of the 1914 eruption caused the former island to be connected with the Osumi Peninsula.
The volcanic activity still continues, dropping large amounts of volcanic ash on the surroundings. Earlier eruptions built the white sands highlands in the region. As of September 2015, the volcano is under a Level 3 (orange) alert by the Japan Meteorological Agency, signifying the volcano is active and should not be approached. The most recent eruption started on February 5, 2016. On September 13, 2016 a team of experts from Bristol University and the Sakurajima Volcano Research Centre in Japan suggested that the volcano could have a major eruption within 30 years.
Sakurajima is a stratosphereic-volcano. Its summit has three peaks, Kita-dake (northern peak), Naka-dake(central peak) and Minami-dake (southern peak) which is active now.
