World Cruise 2017 Day 42 Nagasaki, Japan

Thursday, February 16, 2017

Today the ship arrived i Nagasaki, Japan.  At 8:30 AM I left on a tour called "Shimabara & Fugen Volcano".  The historic city of Shimabara lies about 62 miles east of Nagasaki.  We had a rest stop and arrived at the Magnificent Castle.  It was built in the 17th century and the castle is now a museum of ancient Christian history.

The castle prospered as the residence of 19 successive feudal loads from four clans.  It survived fierce attacks from a rebel force during the Shimabara Rebellion in the 14th year of Kanei (1637) and withstood a series of earthquakes and a giant tsunami that washed against the foot of the castle during the Shimabara Catastrophe in the 4th year of Kansei (1792).

However during the Meiji Restoration, the castle was deserted, dismantled and sold off.  Shimabara citizens had wanted to have the castle reconstructed and it was finally restored in the 39th year of Showa (1964).

We got on the bus and after a short ride we set on a walking tour through Shimabara's Old Town and visit the Samurai District where we could viewed several old houses that have been restored.  We next had a traditional Japan lunch and after lunch we went to Mizunashi Honjin.  This is some preserved ruins of some of the houses buried in the mud and lava rock from the Fugen Volcano which erupted in 1991 and killed 48 people and burying a small village.  After dinner the show was put on by Toni Warne, a singer.  This was her second show.

Nagasaki is the capital and the largest city of Nagasaki Prefecture on the island of Kyushu in Japan. It became a centre of Portuguese and Dutch influence in the 16th through 19th centuries, and the Churches and Christian Sites in Nagasaki have been proposed for inscription on the UNESCO World Heritage List. Part of Nagasaki was home to a major Imperial Japanese Navy base during the First Sino-Japanese War and Russo-Japanese War. Its name means "long cape".
During World War II, the American atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki made Nagasaki the second and, to date, last city in the world to experience a nuclear attack.
As of 1 March 2017, the city has an estimated population of 425,723 and a population density of 1,000 persons per km². The total area is 406.35 km².
Shimabara is a city located on the north-eastern tip of the Shimabara Peninsula, facing Ariake Bay in the east and Mount Unzen (including Fugendake) in the west, in Nagasaki PrefectureKyushuJapan.
As of October 1, 2016, the city has an estimated population of 44,936 and a population density of 540 persons per km². The total area is 82.77 km².
