World Cruise 2017 Day 87 Rhodes, Greece

Sunday, April 2, 2017

Today the ship arrived at Rhodes Greece at 8 AM.   At 8:45 I left on a tour called "Leisurely Lindos".  We drove to Mount Smith for a view of the town.  We then drove 30 miles to the town of Lindos.  Here is the 4th century BC Doric Temple of Athena Lindai high stop the Acropolis.  The tour did not allow the time to walk up to the Temple but we did have some time to explore the old, whitewashed buildings and the narrow streets of the town.  We left Lindos and visited a small ceramic shop to see how the ceramic items are made.  The show tonight was put on by a group of 4 Opera singers and a pianist called Opera Interludes.

Rhodes is the largest of the Dodecanese islands in terms of land area and also the island group's historical capital. Administratively the island forms a separate municipality within the Rhodes regional unit, which is part of the South Aegean administrative region. The principal town of the island and seat of the municipality is Rhodes. The city of Rhodes had 50,636 inhabitants in 2011. It is located northeast of Crete, southeast of Athens and just off the Anatolian coast of Turkey. Rhodes' nickname is The island of the Knights, named after the Knights of Saint John of Jerusalem, who once conquered the land.
Historically, Rhodes was famous worldwide for the Colossus of Rhodes, one of the Seven Wonders of the Ancient WorldThe Medieval Old Town of the City of Rhodes has been declared a World Heritage Site. Today, it is one of the most popular tourist destinations in Europe.

Lindos is an archaeological site, a town and a former municipality on the island of Rhodes, in the DodecaneseGreece. Since the 2011 local government reform it is part of the municipality Rhodes, of which it is a municipal unit.[2] The municipal unit has an area of 178.900 km2.  It lies on the east coast of the island. It is about 50 km south of the town of Rhodes and its fine beaches make it a popular tourist and holiday destination. Lindos is situated in a large bay and faces the fishing village and small resort of Charaki.

Above the modern town rises the acropolis of Lindos, a natural citadel which was fortified successively by the Greeks, the Romans, the Byzantines, the Knights of St John and the Ottomans. This makes the site difficult to excavate and interpret archaeologically. The acropolis offers spectacular views of the surrounding harbours and coastline.
