Today at 8 AM the ship arrived in Guam. The ship had to be cleared by the US Customs and Guam Customs. The customs officials were an hour late getting to the ship. We had a form that we filled out and when our number was called we got in line with our passports. Our first stop was with the US Customs and the next stop was with the Guam Customs. After clearing customs I went on a tour called "Gaan Point & Fort Soledad". The bus stopped at the Talifak Bridge a prime example of Spanish architecture from 1785. Our next stop was at Umatac Bay to see the Magellan Monument which honors the explorer who discovered Guam in 1521. Our next stop was at Fort Soledad fro breathtaking vistas of the surrounding landscape and ancient cannons pointing toward Magellan's landing spot. Our last stop was at Jeff's Pirates Cove, a favorite beach hangout dating back to 1953. We got back to the ship at a lisle past 1 AM. I went to the room because I thought the K-State and KU Basketball game was on ESPN. It was not on TV but I did get to watch most of it when I got back from dinner. Because of the customs delay, the captain delay the time to leave Guam from 5 PM to 7 PM. After dinner I went to the show put on by Daniel Zafrani. His show was a comedy & visual show. His show started coming out of an egg as a bird. He did no talking at any time during the show. His show was different and was very interesting. When I got back to the room I turned on the TV and the recording of the K-State and KU game was showing. They didn't show all of it but included most of the game.
Guam formally the Territory of Guam) is an unincorporated and organized territory of the United States. Located in the western Pacific Ocean, Guam is one of five American territories with an established civilian government. The capital city is Hagåtña and the most populous city is Dededo. In 2015, 161,785 people resided on Guam. Guamanians are American citizens by birth. Guam has an area of 210 sq mi (544 km²) and a population density of 770/sq mi (297/km²). It is the largest and southernmost of the Mariana Islandsand the largest island in Micronesia. Among its municipalities, Mongmong-Toto-Maite has the highest density at 3,691/sq mi (1,425/km²), whereas Inarajan and Umatac have the lowest density at 119/sq mi (47/km²). The highest point is Mount Lamlam at 406 meters (1,332 ft) above sea level.
The Chamorros, Guam's indigenous people, settled the island approximately 4,000 years ago. Portuguese explorer Ferdinand Magellan was the first European to visit the island on March 6, 1521. Guam was colonized in 1668 with settlers, like Diego Luis de San Vitores, a Catholic missionary. Between the 16th century and the 18th century, Guam was an important stopover for the Spanish Manila Galleons. During the Spanish–American War, the United States captured Guam on June 21, 1898. Under the Treaty of Paris, Spain ceded Guam to the United States on December 10, 1898. Guam is among the seventeen Non-Self-Governing Territories of the United Nations.
Before World War II, Guam and four other territories – American Samoa, Hawaii, Wake Island, and the Philippines – were the only American jurisdictions in the Pacific Ocean. On December 7, 1941, hours after the attack on Pearl Harbor, Guam was captured by the Japanese, who occupied the island for thirty months. During the occupation, Guamanians were subjected to beheadings, forced labor, rape, and torture. Guam endured hostilities when American forces recaptured the island on July 21, 1944; Liberation Day commemorates the victory. Since the 1960s, the economy has been supported by two industries: tourism and the United States Armed Forces.
